Kirkwood Pilot project is located in Kirkwood, Sundays River Local Municipality, Eastern Cape. It was installed and commissioned in January, 2016, the 1st deployment of its kind in Africa Continent.
Through the long years, the existing wastewater treatment plant couldn't cope with the increasing population and doesn't operate well as when it was designed due to a lot of reasons. The effluent, as a result, polluted the downstream river.
After careful research & study, Local Municipality took the plunge to pilot this new technology in kirkwood. In 2 weeks time, 2 units of Integrated Wastewater Treatment & Reuse Package has been deployed and commissioned, which makes a daily processing capacity of 300CBM. Apparently the effluent quality has been improved and meet up to S.A. national standards according to the lab test results.
On 26th February, 2016, Deputy ministers from Ministry of Water & Sanitation, Ministry of Energy, S.A. Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs, and 30 more government officials have paid an inspection on this project with their visit to Kirkwood. Deputy Minister, Ms Thembisile Majola, Ms. Pamela Tshwete and Mr Andries Carl Nel hhighly praised the project after seeing the project and understood about the technology. As quoted by the visit, this technology could be a preferred solution to the areas where people need wastewater treatment facilities and sanitation.
